PRELIMINARY TASK - first attempt
In order to create our first test Prelim task we had to devise a conversation under any situation. To be successful in this we had to consider the 180 degree rule, however in the 6th shot we found that we had switched to the other side during the conversation and as a result it meant that the characters had switched sides when talking. This caused the audience to be confused as to which way each character was facing throughout, we thought using over the shoulder shots would be effective in this shot, however due to breaking the 180 degrees rule it became messy and the shots became crossed. In addition to this we had filmed scenes at different times and make careless mistakes when it came to continuity, for example clothing and accessories are changed throughout. Another issue we noticed with our first attempt was the steadiness of the camera in each of the scenes due to using a held held camera.
180 degree rule
Continuity is a huge part of film-making, therefore when shooting a short scene or film its vital to establish each characters is in space and time in order for the audience to follow the action. When considering this, one of the most basic continuity rules to follow is the 180 Degree Rule.
The 180 Degree Rule states that two characters in a scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the 180 Degree Rule isn't followed, or is broken intentionally, it disrupts the scene disorients the audience. When you break the 180 line, a person who was originally facing left in a scene is all of the sudden facing right. |
PRELIMINARY TASK - final attempt
When attempting to redo the Preliminary task we made sure that we had researched and had a clear understanding of the 180 degree rule in order to demolish any confusion from the audience. As well as this, we returned to looking at the continuity errors in our first attempt and ensured where possible that everything (clothing, accessories etc.) remained the same throughout. To vary the shots to make the scene more interesting, we tried a variety of different angles and shots, for example; a high angle and a close up shot.
Despite the changes we had made after attempting our first Prelim, we still faced the issue of the camera being blurred, which therefore affected the overall quality of the video, as it was a distracting factor. As a result of this in any future tasks given we will ensure that we check the camera settings before filming and ensure no shots are taken if the camera quality isn't at its best.
